Mother

I wrote this for my mother, whichever one you choose. It’s for myself as well, but I’m not sure to which character I belong. The reader should decide.

Do you hear me—
speaks the tender wind.
Do you sense me—
mouths the lapping tide.
Do I wake you—
my summery child?
Can I caress you—
with my blushing flowers?

Can I sing to you—
with my lingering song?
Can I speak to you—
in a voice my own?
Can I take you—
with my fragile arms?
Do you come to me—
with your heart alone?

Do you love me—
in your earthly way?
Do you watch me—
with your grey eyes?
Do I touch you—
with my emerald lies?
Can you protect me—
in your frail mind?

Why do you hurt me—
with your discordant tool?
Why do you betray me—
with a stabbing bite?
Why do you wound me—
for a single mistake?
Can you beat me—
in your blind belief?

What did I do to you—
with crying eyes alone?
With what did I crush you—
in a warm embrace?
Where did I pinch you—
with a stinging grasp?
Do you still hear my—
single fading song?

Do you still speak for me—
with your burning voice?
Do you still hold me—
with your childish grace?
Do you still watch me—
leaving you alone?
Do you still miss me—
and my glorious song?

Do you wish for me—
now that I have gone?
Do you yearn for me—
without a world to take my place?
Can I still hold you—
in my ashen lake?
Can I still come back to you—
in a different time?

No
I'm gone
And nothing will ever take my space.
